About the Journal

ShodhSamajik: Journal of Social Studies is a half-yearly, open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to deepening understanding of how people, societies, institutions and environments interact. Publishing in Hindi and English, the journal aims to foster critical, evidence-based social inquiry that strengthens informed decision-making, civic engagement and social responsibility at local, national and global levels.

ShodhSamajik provides a platform for researchers, teachers, students, practitioners and policymakers to share original work that engages rigorously with contemporary and historical issues—ranging from democracy, development and public policy to culture, identity, gender, technology and social change. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening followed by a rigorous double-blind peer-review process.

The journal welcomes high-quality contributions that advance knowledge in social studies and allied social sciences, including but not limited to:

  • History and Political History Historical processes, social and intellectual movements, colonial and postcolonial transitions, elections and party politics, political ideologies and state formation.
  • Political Science, Governance and Public Policy Democratic institutions, electoral systems, corruption and institutions, public policy analysis, international relations, constitutional debates, law, rights and justice.
  • Sociology, Social Work and Social Philosophy Family and kinship, social stratification, caste, gender, disability, social inclusion/exclusion, social movements, community organisation and changing social norms.
  • Economics and Development Studies Traditional and contemporary economic practices, livelihoods, labour and employment, real estate and financial practices, self-help groups, digitalisation and economic change.
  • Human Geography and Environment Population and settlement studies, spatial disparities (e.g., child labour geographies), regional development, sustainable sanitation, and human–environment interactions.
  • Education and Social Studies Pedagogy Social studies education, civic and citizenship education, critical thinking and reading, values education, and institutional practices such as green campus and audit initiatives.
  • Culture, Identity, Religion and Philosophy Cultural practices and identities, religion and society, philosophical traditions, memory and heritage (e.g., temple movements, civilisational studies, tribal cultures and identities).
  • Technology, Media and Society Social impacts of technology and AI, algorithmic policing, legal–ethical implications of emerging technologies, and their consequences for inequality, rights and democracy.

ShodhSamajik publishes full-length research articles, theoretical and critical essays, field-based and developmental practice papers, and book reviews that clearly relate to social studies and its core disciplines—History, Geography, Civics/Political Science, Economics and Sociology.

Our Global Relevance

Each article published in ShodhSamajik: Journal of Social Studies contributes toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As an open-access, half-yearly, Hindi–English journal in history, geography, civics, economics and sociology, it deepens understanding of how people, societies and institutions interact in a rapidly changing world.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being- Studies on maternal and child health care, drug addiction among urban youth, sustainable sanitation, mental health, resilience in adolescents with disabilities and micronutrient-rich diets for women address health and well-being in their social context.

SDG 4: Quality Education- Work on visual representations and reading comprehension, green audit and green campus for NAAC, and the journal’s own mission to foster critical thinking and civic engagement in social studies all strengthen inclusive, reflective education.

SDG 5: Gender Equality- Research on gendered child labour, women’s awareness of human rights, Musahar caste women, women’s leadership in elections and “public man, private woman” dynamics examines inequalities and pathways to women’s empowerment.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth- Analyses of tribal economic practices, digital India and employment, real estate ecosystems, economic participation through self-help groups and the impact of technology and AI on growth and unemployment link livelihoods with inclusive development.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities- Articles on Birhor and Nyishi tribes, Musahar caste women, child labour geographies, dysfunctional families, and leftist and decolonial politics explore structural marginalisation, social justice and strategies to reduce inequality.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities- Research on sustainable sanitation in rural India, traditional economic and cultural practices, heritage and identity (Ram temple movement, Sapt Sindhu civilisation, Sankardeva’s innovations) informs more resilient, inclusive and culturally rooted communities.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions- Work on electoral processes in South Africa, democratic institutions in India, corruption and development, legal and ethical implications of AI, algorithmic policing, client dispute resolution and temple and partition politics examines how power, law and institutions shape peace and justice.

We welcome submissions from historians, geographers, political scientists, economists, sociologists, educationists, social workers, policy practitioners, and students of social studies. By combining empirical research, theoretical reflection, and field-based insights, ShodhSamajik: Journal of Social Studies advances critical understanding and practical solutions that support more just, inclusive, and sustainable societies.
