Abstract

The rapid development of information technology has brought about unprecedented changes in every sphere of human life. Modern digital technologies—such as the internet, smartphones, social media, and artificial intelligence—have created new opportunities for education, communication, and knowledge acquisition for children and adolescents; however, they have also given rise to new challenges such as cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, cyber grooming, identity theft, financial fraud, and other cybercrimes. The rising trend of these crimes has raised serious questions regarding the effectiveness of child protection mechanisms and the legal system. The objective of this study is to conduct a socio-legal analysis of the relationship between information technology and crimes against children in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh. It also aims to evaluate the effectiveness of relevant legal provisions, including the Information Technology Act (2000), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act (2012), the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (2015), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023). The study employs descriptive, analytical, and empirical research methodologies. The research indicates that the prevention of crimes against children can be made more effective through legal literacy, parental supervision, school-based cybersecurity education, and the enhancement of technical capabilities. The study's findings offer valuable guidance to policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and judicial bodies regarding legal and administrative reforms for child protection in the digital age.
